Spring 2020 Encamporee

Join Troop 46466 and Service Unit 111 in a super-fun Spring Encamporee!

A perfect, easy, next step in outdoor progression.

This camp is built for:

  • New campers - at any level

  • Daisies and Brownies

  • Leaders beginning their camping journey with Girl Scouts

FOCUS:

  • Fun and success!

I'm a Girl Scout Leader - Do I need to have my Outdoor Overnight Training?

WE LOVE CAMP KIRBY!

Where is Camp Kirby?

50 minutes from my house in North Bellingham!

60 minutes from my mom's house in South Marysville!

With Camp Kirby being so close to the Northern Counties, it's a low-stakes camping trip.

Girl Scout needs a fresh sleeping bag? We can wash it.

Girl Scout having a hard time at night? She can easily get home.

Girl Scout would be more successful with their family participating? Plenty of room!

Agreements

Edits and clarifications will be made as we work through planning this program! We will be transparent about any changes we make!

Tone of the Encamporee

It is New-Camper friendly. For many Girl Scouts, Leaders, or the Family, this may be their first camping trip. This means, we run the timing of things loosely. Sometimes a Girl Scout might be late for breakfast. Or need more downtime. Or need to stay with her Grown-Up. All of those things are cool.

Adult Expectations

All Grown-Ups are expected to help move the fun forward. This includes:

  • Serving a shift in the kitchen* and End-Of-Camp Kaper*

  • Anyone standing around is fair game to be tasked to do something!

  • Participating with a great attitude!

  • Using positive language and kindness when speaking to children and other volunteers.

*Kitchen Duties

Kitchen duties may include: Unpacking, Food Prep, Dining Room Set Up, Dish Washing, Dining Room Reset (Sweep), Packing Up.

Each grown-up is expected to serve 1 or 2 "Kapers" in the kitchen. We understand that some Girl Scouts may need their Grown-Up's support out in the camp (vs. being in the kitchen), and we are supportive to work around their needs (often by including your Girl Scout in the Kaper!).

Once registration is closed, we'll be able to figure out how many shifts are needed.

Note from Christine: Kitchen duty is actually fun. "Dish pit" is my favorite job with all those fancy sprayers and industrial instant dishwashers!

*End of Camp Kaper

End of Camp Kapers can be completed by group. This includes cleaning bathrooms, moving trash, cleaning up any equipment.

Once registration is closed, we'll be able to figure out all of the jobs needed.

Tagalongs / Girl Sprouts / Dragonalongs / Parents

Are welcome! Let's get everyone outside, it's wonderful for the Soul! Tagalongs and Siblings are expected to be managed effectively by their Grown-Ups, keeping the focus on the program for the Girl Scouts attending. Grown-Ups are trusted to handle any extras. Camp Leadership are empowered to to ask for corrections. Out-of-hand extras will be asked to leave (but we know things will be handled way before this kind of escalation!).

Cabin Assignments

Cabin assignments will be made after registration closes. Best efforts will be made to keep large families together, however any Men may be assigned a "Man Cabin." We will always follow 2-Deep Leadership (2-unrelated women OR a cabin of only girls OR Families OR a Man Cabin), and keep in mind the best fit. Special housing requests can be made, and we will do our best to accommodate.

Luckily, we are talented at strategery and arranging!

Rainy Day Plan

There are several indoor places for fun and enchantment! OR - even better! splash in the rain!

Packing List

Packing list ready for easy printing is on the way!

BEING PREPARED

Complete Health Form for each person attending.

Whistle

  • Even though Girl Scouts will never be without a buddy, and will stay in main camp, it's important that they have a whistle, and begin practicing. We use a "Zero Chances" strategy where Girl Scouts are reminded that it is only for emergencies. If they blow it messing around, the whistle is removed, and are welcome to try again the next day. We celebrate our success by whistle-blowing as a group on Sunday.

CLOTHES FOR SLEEPING

Warm Pajamas - Pro Tip from Christine -- Have your kids sleep in tomorrow’s clothes, then they don’t have to get dressed in the morning. Alternatively, have tomorrow’s clothes in their sleeping bag, so it gets warm all night.

Hat for sleeping in (like a stocking cap. We lose most of our heat from our heads, so I require my family to go to sleep with a hat on. They can take it off later if they get hot).

100% NEW clothes for sleeping in. Change out everything, including underwear, and especially socks.

Any other overnight gear needed for your Girl Scout.

DAY CLOTHES

3 pairs of pants / shorts

3 shirts (long or short sleeve)

4 underwear (more if needed)

Bag for Dirty or Wet Clothes
